Death Rides the Forest: Perceptions of Fire, Land Use, and Ecological Restoration of Western Forests

چکیده

Large wild fires occurring in forests, grasslands, and chaparral in the last few years have aroused much public concern. Many have described these events as “catastrophes” that must be prevented through aggressive increases in forest thinning. Yet the real catastrophes are not the fires themselves but those land uses, in concert with fire-suppression policies that have resulted in dramatic alterations to ecosystem structure and composition. The first step in the restoration of biological diversity ( forest health) of western landscapes must be to implement changes in those factors that have caused degradation or are preventing recovery. This includes changes in policies and practices that have resulted in the current state of wildland ecosystems. Restoration entails much more than simple structural modifications achieved though mechanical means. Restoration should be undertaken at landscape scales and must allow for the occurrence of dominant ecosystem processes, such as the natural fire regimes achieved through natural and/or prescribed fires at appropriate temporal and

An Introduction to Key Issues in Fire Regime Research for Fuels Management and Ecological Restoration

The basic premise behind many projects aimed at wildfire hazard reduction and ecological restoration in forests of the western United States is the idea that unnatural fuel buildup has resulted from suppression of formerly frequent fires. This premise and its implications need to be critically evaluated by conducting area-specific research in the forest ecosystems targeted for fuels or ecologic...

Spatial Analysis of Central Zagros Forest Fragmentations for Conservation and Restoration Purposes (A Case Study: Posht kuh Forests, Fereydoonshahr, Isfahan Province)

In the current study, conservation strategies were employed for the spatial analysis of forest fragmentation and field assessment approaches in a forest landscape of Central Zagros, in the western part of Isfahan province, Iran. Vegetation and soil properties were accordingly studied in 15 forest sites with various densities including dense, semi-sparse and sparse-forests with 839.2 km2. In the...

Prescribed Burning Perceptions Among Private Landowners: An Annotated Bibliography of Relevant Literature

Introduction Approximately 87% of the southern forests within the United States are owned by private companies (27%) and non‐industrial private forest owners (60%) (Hanson, et al., 2010). Within these southern forests, more than 61% of longleaf pine, a fire‐dependent species, is privately owned (America’s Longleaf Restoration Initiative, 2014). With such a large holding, land management decisio...

The ecological importance of severe wildfires: some like it hot.

Many scientists and forest land managers concur that past fire suppression, grazing, and timber harvesting practices have created unnatural and unhealthy conditions in the dry, ponderosa pine forests of the western United States. Specifically, such forests are said to carry higher fuel loads and experience fires that are more severe than those that occurred historically. It remains unclear, how...

Computing of the Burnt Forest Regions Area Using Digital Image Processing

At present, there is no conventional scientific method to evaluate the area of the burnt regions of forests and in this field, the related organizations use different methods and variables. Also, the speed in performing the processes of area computing and damage evaluation, especially in the extensive damaged forest regions is very slow; consequently, the expression of results takes more ti...
